Family travel is a wonderful bonding opportunity, and if you're adventurous, you're sure to hit on family activities that kids (not to mention their parents!) will remember forever. Of course, as anyone with a family knows, traveling together can also present some very real challenges. Chief among them: How do you find trips to suit all the adventurers in your group - from the youngest child to the oldest?

To help with this dilemma, we've compiled a list of seven excellent family destinations – places to take your kids with plenty of family-friendly activities. And so are the possibilities for fun! We’ve rated them (on a scale of 1-10) by their kid-friendliness, as well as their "wow" factor.

Even the youngest members of your family can enjoy the spectacular views at this national park; the whole family can partake in an informative (and fun!) hike with a park ranger as well as other activities that are awe-inspiring.

This chain of islands, a part of Ecuador, is a wonderland for kids and adults alike. Family activities abound; visitors can snorkel or swim from the beach or on a panga ride, kayak along the shoreline, or go hiking within reach of amazing bird life and learn the story of the elusive giant tortoise and the efforts underway to revive their numbers. Travel experts agree: The best way to see the Galápagos is from the water. With that in mind, there are a number of family-friendly cruises available.

If you have older kids (ages 8 and older) who love animals, this is the trip for you. Wildebeests, zebras and rhinos are plentiful in this East African country. Family activities here include safaris in Serengeti National Park and hiking (with guides) through the spectacular Ngorongoro Conservation Area. There are loads of family-friendly accommodations to choose from.

Mountains, rain forests, jungle rivers and a volcano: Costa Rica really does have everything, including a range of family activities, from zip lining to canoeing, swimming and hiking – sure to appeal to kids of any age. Consider lodging near Arenal National Park where many have kid-friendly options and keep an afternoon free for a relaxing (and fascinating) float down the Peñas Blancas River.

Perched high on a Peruvian mountain ridge, the ancient ruin of the “lost city of the Incas” is one of the most captivating spots in the world. Kids who love hiking will never forget this foray into the Andean mountains. Don't miss visiting an alpaca and llama farm in the Sacred Valley or a market visit in the center of Cusco.

Storybook scenery, outdoor adventures and, oh yes, chocolate – make Switzerland a family vacation a triple delight. Bask in the scenery and dragon-dwelling legends of Mt. Pilatus, take a long toboggan run at Fraekmuentegg, and hop aboard the Glacier Express for breathtaking views on your way to hiking, rock climbing and bicycling in the Engadine Valley.

Seen from boat, biplane or train, Alaska's vast, beautiful wilderness amazes – even the most jaded teenager. Family activities are plentiful; they range from kayaking, to hiking, jet boating and caribou spotting. In Anchorage, don't miss the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center, a refuge for injured or orphaned animals ranging from bears to moose.
